BIOANALYTICAL CHEMISTRY
Course Code: KA7005

Level: Advanced Course

Prerequisite Requirements: Analytical Chemistry I KA5003 (7.5 hp) + Analytical Chemistry II KA5004 (7.5 hp) or equivalent.

This course covers the analysis of a wide variety of analytes, from small molecules to large biopolymers, in biological matrices. Examples of analytes include pharmaceuticals and their metabolites, peptides and proteins. The course aims to give a thorough understanding of the strategies that can be employed when developing bioanalytical methods, how to handle biological samples and how to treat data from such experiments.

The course covers:

Sample preparation using SPE, LLE, protein precipitation and protein extraction.
Separation using HPLC, GC and CE.
Detection using UV absorption, fluorescence, MS, immunological methods and enzymatic techniques.
Qualitative and quantitative analysis.
Statistics of data generated as well as multivariate evaluation of data.
Method validation and quality assurance, GLP and GMP.
The course includes lectures, experiments, a short laboratory project and a visit to a company.

Examination:

To complete the course the student must pass the written exam as well as the written lab reports and project report. The student must also participate in the external visit.
